Johanna Grawunder

Johanna Grawunder is a designer and artist known for her work in lighting, architecture, and furniture design. Her portfolio includes public lighting installations, architectural interventions, interior design, and limited-edition furniture and lighting collections for Carpenters Workshop Gallery in the United States and Europe. She has also collaborated with renowned architects and brands such as Flos, Boffi, and Glas Italia.
After earning a degree in Architecture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, she studied with Superstudio in Florence before joining Sottsass Associati in Milan. There, she co-designed many of the firm’s most prestigious projects alongside Ettore Sottsass, becoming a partner in 1989. In 2001, she established her own studio in San Francisco and Milan, continuing to push the boundaries of design and lighting.
With a lifelong passion for light as a medium, Grawunder integrates architectural principles, industrial materials, and advanced lighting technologies into her designs. Her work is featured in major museum collections, including the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), LACMA, CNAP, SFMOMA, the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris).
